Without a doubt the best thing we did while visiting Bali. We did the Mount Batur sunrise hike and were picked up at our hotel at 2:30 AM. We arrived at the base around 3:45 and started heading up just after 4. Headlamps, poles, water, and food were all provided. We had a small pack with us, but really there was no need as our guide took great care of us. For simplicity in packing we left our hiking boots at home and just brought sneakers - this worked totally fine for us on this hike. We are regular hikers at home in Seattle, but by no means rugged adventurers. We were able to get up the mountain by 5:30, about 20 minutes before the crowds started to arrive. It gets crowded up at the top so we especially appreciated that our guide knew where to go for the best photos and made sure we didn't linger too long and get stuck behind the masses. When we got back down they gave us the option of doing the hot springs. They looked nice but small and we were feeling pretty tired so we opted to just head back to our villa. The photos speak for themselves; this experience is fantastic and was the highlight of our Bali trip.
